Eva Bennett

Meet Eva Bennett, the West Virginia potter behind Eva Throws!

Tell us a little about yourself!

I am a West Virginia-based pottery artist, finding my creative take mostly on things you can eat or drink out of, and decorate with.

What drew you to your craft?

I was drawn to this craft in particular because it gives the artist an opportunity to “get their hands dirty”. It’s such a physical art that helps the body and mind process non-physical life “stuff” and ultimately you get some really cool decorative and/or functional pieces, that may even serve as a reminder of the moment in time in which it was created.

What is your favorite thing you have ever made?

I’m always trying to create my favorite piece and I’m not sure I’ve done it yet. Creating something that connects with another soul, that process and connection is my favorite.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be lawyer at a big law firm in a big city, handling only their pro bono work.

How would you describe your creative process?

If I had to describe my creative process in one word I would say: FLOW. I rarely have a concrete plan, I often come to the wheel with ideas, a direction or something I want to try, but truly the clay tells me what it wants to be and I let it. I don’t try to manipulate it too much. My most favorite pieces occur when the flow is real and organic.

What advice would you give yourself 10 years ago?

Trust your gut, take the chances and opportunities and take care of yourself, don’t worry so much about everyone else.

Why is it important to support local artists and makers?

I am just in awe of the local community we have of artists and creators. Whether they do their craft full time or squeeze it in whenever they can, they are making sacrifices to bring their creative takes into this world and well that’s just the most beautiful thing. Art is what breathes life into the soul of this world, it’s what matters, what unifies and brings about peace. It is so important to our existence.

Why do you love doing what you do?

Creating the way that I do helps me express things I can’t quite find the words for, I feel more seen and heard than I have in a long time, simply by sharing my pieces with others.

What advice do you have for other makers who want to start their own business?

Do it, do it now. Do it before you’re ready, you have everything figured or you’re sure. Just start, the rest will fall into place.
