Tell us a little about yourself!

I am an adventurous artist that tries to see the silver linings in the world. I have calloused hands and a tender heart. I make small batch ceramics primarily and enjoy exploring new mediums and ideas.

What drew you to your craft?

I have always been curious about the world around me; living in the foothills of Appalachia in Zanesville, Ohio, and going to college in Athens, Ohio, at Ohio University led to loving the outdoors. After getting my BFA in ceramics, I came back to Zanesville and started Stephanie Orr Art. I’ve created an environment balanced with whimsy and function.

Describe your studio space. Where do you like to create?

I’m lucky and persistent- and most of the homes I’ve had also had space carved out for creating. I wouldn’t be me without my stash of art supplies, projects in transition and new ideas.

What is your favorite thing you have ever made?

Opening a fresh glaze-fired kiln feels like Christmas - everything is my favorite!

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I never had an answer to this because I never wanted to grow up. I wanted to do whatever I wanted to do.

How would you describe your creative process?

There are many roads that lead to a fully finished idea. Some are quicker than others but those also come with their own results.

What advice would you give yourself 10 years ago?

Just keep going. I’ve had a piece of paper hanging in my studio since college: “A fixed idea ends in madness or heroism.” (Victor Hugo)

Why do you love doing what you do?

When I’m making, talking about art, involved with other artists - I’ve never felt more myself.

Why is it important to support local artists and makers?

There are so many minds out there with something to share. You won’t find this quality of people or products in big stores.
